Taking part in an educational TV series

A new documentary hosted by the late Michael Mosley began airing on Channel 5 in August 2024, entitled Wonders of the Human Body.

The second episode in the series includes a focus on hip replacement surgery, highlighting that one in 10 people will require this procedure in their lifetime. Dr Mosley meets Complex Hip Surgery’s Prof Alister Hart, who explains the role of cartilage in cushioning the joints, and how hip pain is often the result of bone rubbing on bone.

How 3D printing has enhanced hip replacement surgery

Dr Mosley then joins Prof Hart in surgery as he performs a hip replacement for Claire, a particularly young patient, in her 40s. The average age for the procedure is 67.

A unique, 3D printed model of Claire’s hip helps pinpoint exactly where to cut the bone for the best possible positioning for the new hip. As part of his commentary during the operation, Prof Hart says: “It’s very like Lego. That fits very nicely - very solid.”

The programme then catches up with Claire 10 weeks after the procedure. She has no pain in her hip for the first time in decades.
